NiagaraAX 3.8 Release Features

Improved User Experience Drives Greater Efficiencies and Flexibility

Mobile technology has become a standard with all businesses today. With the release of NiagaraAX 3.8, mobile functionality has been greatly expanded to allow users to create complex mobile views by leveraging absolute positioning in the mobile pane, the ability to reuse existing Px pages as mobile views, and a new zoom feature that facilitates mobile design.

In addition, with the release of NiagaraAX 3.8, the ability to design graphics that can be resized without impacting the quality of the image is now possible using the embedded Batik Java SVG toolkit.

Enhanced Framework Security

Stronger AuthenticationAs a result of our on-going commitment to arm the NiagaraAXFramework with powerful security features based on industry best practices, release 3.8 includes password strength configuration designed to provide users the ability to determine the parameters for each strength level of passwords based upon installation needs.1

Active Directory IntegrationNiagaraAX 3.8 incorporates the latest standard of LDAP integration (LDAPv3) which allows the benefits of LDAP single sign-on with additional security enhancements.  Users will now be able to use LDAPv3 with support for Kerberos Client Authentication, the industry standard that enables remote access without having to pass user password information over the network.

Federal Ready – FIPS 140-2 and IEEE 802.1x Compliant

NiagaraAX 3.8 supports IEEE 802.1x functionality and provides a software option that will make the Niagara station FIPS 140-2 Level 1 compliant.  The FIPS option meets the requirements for any IP devices that will be deployed on a government IT network. FIPS compliance provides an additional layer of security by using a NIST-certified cryptographic module that is used for common IT security functions.

Java 7 Update 25 may cause Niagara applet to fail

Java 7 Update 25 may cause Niagara applet to fail

Oracle has just released JAVA 7 update 25 which appears to cause the Niagara web applet to fail. This issue may affect your customers who accept the default automatic JAVA upgrade.

Am I affected?

If JAVA 7 update 25 is installed, web browser users who login with a Workbench profile (which uses JAVA applets) are affected.  The wbapplet is prevented from being started, and the browser appears to stop loading the Niagara user interface.

All released versions of Niagara may be affected.

All browsers may be affected.

Is there a Workaround?

While no workaround is currently known for the Workbench profile in a web browser, our engineering team is working to identify the issues and make verified patches available for all supported versions.
Alternative workarounds are:

  • Edit user account to use HX profile. This does not use JAVA applets so does not require JAVA plugin. (Mobile profile in AX 3.7 should not be affected either).
  • Downgrade JAVA plug-in back to JAVA 7 update 21. This will require accessing Oracle JAVA archive and creating a free Oracle login to access the installer.

Further information

At this time we are still investigating the cause of the issue. We will provide further information when available.

If you have any questions, please contact your VYKON sales representative or our Sales Support Team at:  salessupport@tridium.com

Tridium is releasing a security patch for NiagaraAX
Posted by Bobby Palmer (Import) on 11 February 2013 06:42 PM

Tridium Issues Security Patch

All customers should apply patch to existing NiagaraAX 3.5, 3.6 or 3.7 systems

Tridium is releasing a security patch for NiagaraAX 3.5, 3.6 and 3.7 that addresses the vulnerability associated with the Security Bulletin that Tridium issued on February 6, 2013.   The Security Patch is now available.  The patch removes a directory traversal vulnerability allowing a user with a valid user account or guest privileges to escalate his or her privileges on a NiagaraAX system.

Tridium strongly recommends all customers apply the security patch to any existing 3.5, 3.6 or 3.7 systems to correct this vulnerability.  Customers with systems running a version of NiagaraAX released prior to 3.5 should purchase an upgrade to the latest version of the Niagara Framework software in order to take advantage of the latest security improvements.

The security patch along with details about the patch and installation instructions are available on Niagara Central at https://www.niagara-central.com/ord?portal:/dev/wiki/Niagara_AX_Security_Patch_11-Feb-2013.  (Niagara Central access required)

The patch does not affect any standard Niagara configuration or functionality. The only impact of the change is to remove the vulnerability.

It is important all Niagara Framework customers and system integrators review their security policies to ensure their Internet-facing systems are properly protected. We continue to recommend to all customers that Niagara Framework systems operate behind a firewall or VPN.  Tridium understands the importance of providing a securable software framework to its customers.  Whenever critical security issues are discovered, Tridium is committed to taking the appropriate steps to resolve them quickly.

Oracle Releases Critical Patch for Java SE
Posted by Bobby Palmer (Import) on 05 February 2013 04:10 PM

Oracle Releases Critical Patch for Java SE

VYKON recommends downloading and installing patch

Oracle has released a Critical Patch Update for Java SE that addresses a number of security vulnerabilities.  The patch contains fixes for 50 security vulnerabilities including 44 that only affect client deployment of Java.  These vulnerabilities can only be exploited on desktops through Java Web Start applications or Java applets.  One reported vulnerability exploits the installation process of client deployment of Java – installation of the Java Runtime Environment on desktops.  This Critical Patch Update also includes fixes that were previously released with the Java 7 Update 11 alert. (Security Alert CVE-2013-0422).

We are evaluating the impact of the security alert from Oracle on systems using Niagara and will issue a follow-up bulletin once our impact analysis has been completed.

VYKON recommends that customers evaluate the risk of enabling Java based on how the affected PC is used.  In any case, VYKON recommends that customers download and install the Critical Patch Update.   The patch can be found at this link:  http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/security/javacpufeb2013-1841061.html

Additional guidelines on updating the JRE on a Windows Platform can be found at this updated Tech Tip on Niagara Central:  http://www.niagara-central.com/ord?portal:/dev/wiki/Updating_the_JRE_on_a_Windows_Platform.  Login required to access.

Tridium Announces Hardware EOL (End-of-Life) Policy

Effective immediately, Tridium is introducing an EOL (End-of-Life) policy to the North American Price list.  We have been listening to our customers who asked for advanced notice on product End-of-Life notifications.  The goal is to provide ample time to plan for parts obsolescence and migration to newer hardware platforms when available.  An EOL tab has been added to the North American Price list and the following information outlines the policy:

  1. Tridium is providing a long term phase out program to provide parts for items included in this EOL announcement.  The EOL tab will outline when the date last orders can be placed.
  2. The EOL tab will contain detailed information and guidelines concerning ordering parts.  Standard lead times will not apply, and Tridium reserves the right to review and reject an EOL product order.
  3. Parts on the EOL tab will still be sold with a standard warranty.  After the parts are no longer available for sale replacements will still be available for warranty replacements.
  4. Once placed on the EOL list, Tridium’s OEMs should begin developing a migration plan to avoid part availability issues in the future. 1
  5. An Office Demo part version of an EOL listed platform will be available for 90 days from the EOL Entry Date. Your sales representative will be contacting you in February with an updated price list to reflect these changes.
  6. This policy is in effect as of Jan 1, 2013. The following AX parts have been moved to the EOL list.
